Boys’ Basketball

Coming off a regional championship, the varsity boys’ basketball team has high expectations. The team started off their season at the Ron Johnson Thanksgiving tournament, finishing fourth overall with a 2-2 record. While senior Harrison Kranz, who averaged 15 points per game throughout the tournament, and “All Tournament” sophomore Malik Hall led the team, look for the Mustangs to continue relying on their seven to nine man rotation in their upcoming games against Neuqua Valley and Naperville North.

Last weekend, the Mustangs competed in the two day Conant Varsity Invite. Seniors Dylan Ervin (195) and David Rojas (220) placed first, leading the team to a fourth place finish with 149 points. Phillip Sims, Uri Ariza, David Veitch, Tommy Rouse, and Jake Toepfer also placed. “The season is looking bright. We placed at the Conant Tournament for the first time in school history and about half of our line up is underclassmen. We hope to keep making history as the season goes on,” Toepfer said. This week is a busy week for the Mustangs, competing Thursday at the Montini Dual meet, Friday against Neuqua, and Saturday at the Niles West Varsity Quad.

Girls’ Basketball

In a recent tournament over Thanksgiving break, the Mustangs went 2-3, losing to Benet Academy, Oswego East High School and Bartlett High School. These losses can be amounted to a lack of experience with each player’s individual style, seeing as many graduating players have given their spots to underclassmen. “This year is bringing a lot of changes for us, but we’re working through them day by day and learning and growing as a team. We’re figuring out how to play as a team and learn each other’s playing styles,” senior Cheyenne Krehl said. However, the Mustangs did beat North Chicago High School and triumphed over Rockford Auburn High School 64-54 in overtime in tournament play. The team’s overall record this season is 2-4.
