Boys’ Basketball

The Mustangs began conference play at home last Friday night as they fell to Neuqua Valley in a double overtime thriller, 84-83. The boys quickly found themselves at a 16 point deficit at the end of the first quarter, but turned it around in the second quarter, ending the half with a 37-35 lead. The rest of the game was back and forth, and the bench stepped up huge throughout the game. Sophomore Jayden Reed and Junior Ashton Creal tied for 13 points, while Matt Helwig led the team with 22 points, along with the game tying three pointer to send the game into double overtime. Although the result of this game ended in a very tough loss, the players are holding their heads high as they face the rest of the season. “It was definitely a physically draining game, but the good thing is that we have a quick turnaround against a team that we need to beat in order to win the conference,” Matt Helwig said. Wrestling

The Mustangs defeated Neuqua Valley last Friday 35-31. Pins from Uri Ariza, Jake Toepfer, David Rojas and Dylan Ervin were key to the victory. “Our mentality was to just go out and wrestle. If we just wrestle like we know how, then we’d come out with a victory,” Ervin said. This week poses a busy schedule, competing Thursday against Naperville North, Friday against Naperville Central, and the Varsity Quad at Main South HS.

Girls’ Basketball

This week, the Mustangs lost to Neuqua Valley 40-63 and added yet another victory to their list, this time beating Naperville North 63-59. When asked how the team plans to step up their game, forward Bri Hall explained the importance of defense in this year’s team. “This year our coaches are taking a defensive approach. Defense wins games for us since, as a team, we collectively lack varsity experience. Our coach is putting emphasis on details and finishing plays. Effort is very crucial in our program,” Hall said.
