Everyone knows that buying Christmas gifts can be expensive. Especially if you are like me and have a lot of people to give gifts to. Being the youngest of six kids, I knew I was gonna have to make something, and in bulk. So, I turned to Pinterest.

Search: DIY Christmas Presents

There wasn’t many recommendations for something to make for a guy, but luckily I have mostly sisters. I saw that lots of Pinners who were suggesting a sugar scrub, which is a body care product that is used to rid of dry skin and make your skin really soft. It sounded easy and like a good idea, so I picked a recipe and went for it.

How to make a peppermint sugar scrub according to Pinterest:

You’ll need: Coconut oil, sugar, and peppermint essential oils, two bowls, and mason jars.

  1. Pour two cups of white or cane sugar into the bowl
  2. Pour ¼ of a cup of coconut oil or other carrier oil into the sugarIMG_1518
  3. Pour one drop of essential oil into mix
  4. Separate into two bowls and pour in two drops of red food coloring
  5. Pour into mason jar by evenly layering and packing the two sugar colors to get the “candy cane” effect.IMG_1517

The Pinner then proceeds to give a link to a different pin where you can print little stickers off.

How I say is the best way to achieve best homemade gift at christmas:

You’ll need: Coconut oil — Target $10.74

       Sugar — Target $2.89

Essential oils: Target $9.99 (these seemed super expensive until I used it and realized that one little bottle will probably last through next holiday season.)

      Mason Jars — Michaels $15.75

      Three Bowls

  1. Put warm water in a bowl and place coconut oil container into this water. When purchasing Coconut oil I realized that the type made for your body you have to melt and this is the best way to do so.
  2. Pour two cups of sugar into a large bowl
    1. after your second or third jar you can start eyeballing it
  3. Pour a cup of the Coconut oil, or until it is similar to gel texture. You can test it out on your hands to see if it is good scrub texture.
  4. Pour no more than three drops of essential oils into the sugar mix. It is very difficult to get only one.
  5. Clump the sugar a mound in the middle of the bowl and divide it in half. Dump one of the halves into another bowl
  6. Pour in 6-10 drops of food coloring, any less then six and it will be a very light pink and won’t give the desired look.
  7. Pour the white sugar mix in (without packing it), then pour the red in, and repeat till jar is full.98
  8. Then decorate the jar with ribbon or tissue or stickers.

Have fun with the decorating, wrapping it, or putting stickers, all over it really personalize the gift even more and make it very fun to make and for those who get the gift.

So overall, it is an easy recipe and a great gift. Just as a warning the first jar or two you make may not turn out perfect but, the more you make the better they look. When you get comfortable with the process you can try different sents or different colors, like lavender or purple (red and blue food coloring together).

By making the gifts I managed to give 10 people gifts that I probably would have spent $25 each on without this gift. I saved myself just around $210.
