Kamala Harris
Kamala Harris is without a doubt the establishment pick for this election. CNN has her as their number one on their lists despite her losing in almost every poll to both Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden. She does have a few advantages however, as the senator from California if she manages to take her home state she’d be leading the pack early on and get more attention from voters. Her past track record is less than ideal, however. Despite claiming to have always supported the legalization of marijuana she laughed at the idea of it during her race for California attorney general. That and her bad track record in criminal justice means that this primary race may shape up to be quite similar to the 2016 primaries: progressives vs centrists. If Kamala pulls in enough centrists and wins the black vote, a very possible reality, she does stand to beat Bernie Sanders in a one on one race. However, it is worth noting that she won’t pull voters in just because she has brown skin. Minority voters are never to be underestimated which is a lesson that the democratic establishment fails to realize time and time again. Minorities may decide the election but they will vote for the candidate who will benefit them the most, not the one that looks the most like them.
