Chance the Rapper, “The Big Day” 2/10

It has been three years since Chance the Rapper said his now famous verse in Kanye West’s “Ultralight Beam”. To the sound of a gospel choir chance rapped, “I met Kanye West, I’m never going to fail.” Chance was unfortunately wrong. The biggest question that the “Big Day” gives us is how was it possible for Chance, with his mountain of producers, rappers, and mentors, to come out with an album as bad as this? It is clear what the Chicago rapper wanted to do with this album, he wanted to live up to his mentor Kanye West and produce an album covering many genres while staying sonically consistent. It seems Chance thought having beats that sound like they were made as a quick demo in 2005 mixed with soul samples would be the best way to achieve the consistency. Even when a song’s production is nice and well made the lyricism Chance provides is some of the worst in his career. When you compare Chance’s “Coloring Book” to this hot mess, you clearly see how this rapper went wrong. The worst part is that Chance is talented, rich, and does have good musical taste but he somehow thought this was okay.
