Rick+and+Morty

Rick and Morty

Rick and Morty (2013-)

Many adult cartoons depict a dysfunctional family as they get into wacky adventures. Rick and Morty is similar to these shows in that sense, yet it adds a level of complexity not seen in the other shows. The show follows Rick as he returns into his daughter’s family’s life. Rick tries to earn his place in his family while he also goes on crazy adventures with his grandson Morty around the multiverse. Being a show made for an adult audience, Rick and Morty contains a mature level of humor. Rick’s scientific skills enable he and Morty to explore different dimensions. The characters often find themselves in bizarre circumstances, and through the use of humor and problem solving, they have to find a solution. The mature audience of the show also means that it goes to dark places unseen in most cartoons. Many teens are able to resonate with the show because it dives into themes such as alienation or anxiety. Also, it shows familial difficulties that many people can identify with.

The originality and wit of Rick and Morty have caused its popularity. The show goes beyond the usual tropes of an adult show. As of 2018, Adult Swim renewed 70 episodes. It is currently releasing the first ten of those episodes in season four.
