“Don’t Let’s Start” by They Might Be Giants
“They Might Be Giants,” perhaps my favorite band, has something for everyone. While this song is one of their older ones, and therefore more abstract in nature compared to their newer, more obvious lyrics, it still has a recognizable story: a man trying as hard as he can to persuade his girlfriend to not break up with him, despite the relationship hitting a breaking point. With its gnarled sound and whiplash beat, this is a song that’s practically begging you to get up and move. And of course, like any great TMBG song, there is an undercurrent of cynicism that weaves in and out of the song like yarn through a loom: “No one in the world ever gets what they want, and that is beautiful. Everyone dies, frustrated and sad- and that is beautiful!”
