Birthday by Bulldog Eyes
Bulldog Eyes has been one of my favorite artists for a while now, mainly owing to the overall aesthetic of their songs. If you have ever seen pictures of liminal spaces, those places that feel so nostalgically familiar and yet unknown and haunted, that is exactly what Bulldog Eyes’s music sounds like. It is as if the feeling of being awake at two in the morning was made into a melody.
“Birthday” in particular is one of my favorites for its jumpy beat and sense of harmony. Bulldog Eyes’s music also always feels… off, which is another thing I love about it. There’s always this sense of skittishness and uncertainty, which adds to the overall atmosphere, and it is prevalent even in this more upbeat offering: ‘And you will go back home to find/A town you do not remember…’ It all feels so familiar yet so unknown, and it is that particular uncanny valley that makes my heart sing.
