Despite Oct. 3 being named “National Mean Girl’s Day”, for all three District 204 schools, this year marks a second national holiday…the first triple homecoming. Not only do we share the name “Valley”, we also share the color gold, and unfortunately this year, the same homecoming date.

Between all three schools, there are many people in relationships with students from other schools. Now, what does this mean for couples who go to different schools? Decisions.

“My boyfriend goes to Waubonsie, so it was hard to decide which homecoming we would attend. I think it was unfair to schedule all homecomings on the same day because either way one of us will be missing out on our high school traditions and memories, ” senior Danielle Schmitt said.

With all three schools’ dances on the same night, scheduling dinner reservations, hair appointments, corsage/boutonniere pick-up, and nail appointments is going to be difficult. And to make matters worse, Naperville Central’s homecoming is also the same night.

“Dinner reservations are going to be crazy for people to find since all three high schools are so close together. I had already made mine a month in advance,” Waubonsie Valley senior Lauren Howard said. “Also, girls are going to have a lot of trouble trying to find hair and nail appointments, especially because there is a limited amount of places that do them, and now there three times the amount of girls looking for appointments that day,” Howard added.  

The decision of homecoming night is largely based off of the dates provided by our conference for home football games and other events happening at each school.

“ We will discuss things like the opponent, date, other events at MVHS and within the district.  We don’t get to pick our football schedule, opponents, or locations. They are given to us by the DVC, so we use that as a guide. We only have four or five home games each year, so those are the dates we work with to start,” athletic director Daniel Debruycker said.

Although the decision to host this year’s homecoming on Oct. 3 was made by former athletic director Robert Lathrop and other school officials, Debruycker agrees that the decision for next year’s homecoming date will be dependent on the date of Waubonsie’s and Neuqua’s.
