Steven Universe

Steven Universe  (2013-)

Steven Universe takes stereotypical plots and unique characters and turns them into a beautiful story. The show centers around a young boy named Steven Universe who discovers his mother’s past while living under the watch of the Crystal Gems. He and the Gems have the task of saving their world along with other worlds through their powers and friendship. The creator of the show, Rebecca Sugar, is the first female to create a series on Cartoon Network. She is able to portray her characters in a feminine way without making them caricatures of the topic. While Steven’s personality could have been very masculine and prideful like many male protagonists, he is not. Steven is very emotional, and he is a different type of male role model. The other characters are all portrayed with a depth that is not seen in most shows. The Gems all have their flaws, and a lot of the show is them trying to better themselves for the sake of their friends. Steven Universe also portrays love in a beautiful way. The love amongst the Crystal Gems along with many other characters of the show is inspirational for a younger audience. No matter where the plot of the show goes, love always remains a central theme. The show leaves viewers on the edge of their seat as they learn more back story about the Crystal Gems, and the lore of the land they live in.

Steven Universe is a tear-jerker that portrays love and friendship in a stunning way. As the show progresses, viewers learn much more about the characters and the world as a whole. The original Steven Universe series has ended, however, a new limited series known as Steven Universe Future is airing now on Cartoon Network. It is a continuation of the Steven Universe Movie that was released in early September after Steven has grown into a much more mature and well-rounded teenager.
