‘A Burning Hill’ by Mitski
Mitski has a relentless ability to write exactly what the listener needs to hear in every song she releases. There is something remarkable about the way she is able to take, what seems like simple lyrics, and make them some of the saddest words the listener has ever heard. The lyrics “I am a forest fire / and I am the fire and I am the forest /and I am a witness watching it” contradict each other perfectly. She is watching her own self-destruction as if she is an outsider and not the one experiencing it. It flawlessly captures the need to disconnect yourself from what you are going through in order to overcome it, while also realizing that you are hurting yourself more. This song is truly one of a kind and definitely deserves a listen if you are in need of a new favorite sad song.
