Boys’ Golf shoots for birdie in the postseason

The boys’ golf team has had a successful season. Not that that should come as a surprise for anyone; from the six athletes on the Daily Herald scouting report to their strong showings at all of their tournaments, victory has been one good putt away all season.

The Mustang golf team competed at the DuPage Valley Conference last week, finishing seventh and earning themselves a third place seed at IHSA Regionals tournament. Unlike most sports, their tournament schedule continued into post season. The varsity squad competed last Saturday at the Lemont Invite, winning by a margin of just one shot. Next, they’ll be going to the Regional tournament.

Junior Varsity finished their season with a strong performance at the St. Viator Invite. The boys placed third overall, with a combined eighteen hole score of 353. Top performers on that team include sophomore Scott Madland with a score of 81, and sophomore Alex Foster finishing out at 90.

The varsity squad is confident heading onto the back nine of their season. While they’ve dealt with some defeats in individual matchups, the team has been much more successful in the tournament setting.

“I think we perform our best as a team when the less consistent players can play up, which happens more often for us in tournaments,” senior Charlie Kilroy said.

At the individual level, some of the Mustangs have had dominant seasons. Junior Scott Boyajian was projected to be the top performer, and has lived up to that with a consistent personal record.

Senior leadership has been a boon for the team this season, with many of the senior athletes coming in below par. Seniors Matthew Hummel, Matthew Loffredo, Nick Zagurski, and Charlie Kilroy have all hung around the low 40’s on nine holes, and 70’s on the full eighteen.
