On Sept. 12, hoards of students gathered at dawn on the Metea Valley football field for the ABC 7 News Flyover. Students marched into multiple formations choreographed by the Metea Valley Band, spelling METEA, MV, and USA.
Every Friday, ABC 7 News holds a high school flyover, in which they film the students’ school pride at different schools in the area. Their ABC helicopter flies over the football field, filming a formation relevant to the school arranged by spirited students.
Students and teachers arrived at Metea at five in the morning and continued to complete the three different formations until seven a.m. During the freezing two-hour period, people danced around and chanted phrases like, “Go MV! Go Mustangs!” This excited behavior kept the energetic atmosphere alive and kept away some chills. “The students show great team spirit,” said Junior House guidance secretary and poms coach, Charlyn Scott.
Mustang Pride is one of the several reasons why students came to support the event. “Based on how many people that showed up… Metea has built a very strong community, because our pride is growing,” said sophomore Meghana Chaganti. It took a while to develop our school spirit, because we are the newest high school in District 204. However, many students feel that our pride has been officially validated by football games and events like Friday’s flyover.
From a bird’s eye view, the formations looked great, each word spelled out in a different color: black for “Metea,” gold for “MV,” and red, white and blue for “USA.” Despite the weather and early rising, the flyover was a success. In the words of senior Noah Turner, “Metea is here.”
