Boys’ track makes history with a sectional title
Last Thursday, the men’s track and field team made Metea history by winning IHSA Sectionals. The occasion was a cause of great celebration for the team, as they had been working toward this from the beginning. The team came a long way from where it started, an effort that did not come without hard work. “It’s kind of insane how we’ve grown throughout the season compared to my last three years in track and field,” Captain senior Uriel Ferreira said.
Another factor that helped was the team’s bond. Despite being “a large team composed of around a hundred plus kids, they all support each other and try to be the best [they] can,” says Ferreira. On why the sport never grew old, he answers, “It’s something that still excites me, I look forward to working hard every day.”
Regarding the team, the state qualifiers will be heading to Charleston to compete this week from Thursday to Saturday. Many fellow team members will also be attending to show their support.
Despite the diversity in members and range from freshman to seniors, the team still maintains an atmosphere of camaraderie. Their love for the sport is what ultimately connects them. “You just are surrounded by people that love the same thing as you, so you connect with them through that”, says senior Carl Calarde. Be sure to wish the boys good luck at their upcoming Illinois High School Association event!
