The annual blood drive organized by the Business Professionals of America (BPA) was held on Wednesday, January 14 in the dance room to celebrate blood donation awareness month. Students age 16 with permission were able to donate as well as students 17 years old and up with an ID.
“This drive is more important because last week the schools were closed and Heartland had a lot of cancellations of blood drives,” event organizer and BPA advisor Brian Veit said.
“After the holiday season, blood donation is very important and they are counting on a large turnout here,” continued Veit. This was the biggest drive Metea has had to date, with almost 100 students and staff pre-registered, not including walk-ins. “This was the first year we’ve done two, fall and winter,” Veit said. Neuqua and Waubonsie always hold two a year and now, Metea does as well.
“I give blood because it makes me feel good for helping someone out,” senior Emma Burkard said. If students are able to give blood, it’s a great way to give back to the community, get involved, and help someone in need. “It brings the community together to support a good cause,” senior Andrew Betbadal said. Both seniors had donated previously at the fall blood drive back in November.
“If we meet our goal, we are given a scholarship which we put towards national fundraising for our students,” Veit said. BPA has been in charge of the blood drive since the school opened. The blood drive isn’t only helping those who need blood but Metea students as well.
