The Met Gala is one of the crowning events in the fashion world, prompting A-List stars to don designer gowns and tuxedos to walk the red carpet and raise money for the Metropolitan Museum. Each year, the gala takes on a different theme and urges its guests to dress along the lines of said theme. The theme of this year’s Met Gala was “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology”. Although there were a lot of amazing looks, here are a few of my favorites.

When I first saw this dress, I was so intrigued. This dress blends technology and fashion together so well, and fits into the theme perfectly. This gown is such a great example of how technology can spawn creativity and be incorporated into art. The dress was woven with specially made fiber optic fabric; Posen worked with Google to construct fabric that could light up. It looks elegant by itself, and when the lights in the dress are turned on, it looks incredibly futuristic, like something out of a sci-fi movie.

The first time I saw this dress, I had to just look at it for a second to figure out whether I liked it or not. After soaking it in, I think it is so beautiful. The feathered train of the skirt is unique; the simple black top does a great job of keeping the focus on the bottom of the dress. This dress is right on the border of fashionable and freaky, but ends up leaning towards fashion and works so well.

I absolutely love this dress. It’s a perfect combination of fortune teller meets high fashion, creating a uniquely mystical look. The cape and the constellations are really whimsical, but the cutouts keep it from looking too much like a Halloween costume. Kidman’s simple hair and makeup keep the focus on the dress, and keep the look from being too busy.

Watson’s pantsuit (which appears to be a dress at first glance) has a very classic and elegant shape, and all the smaller layers and details add texture and interest, which I love. But as if this outfit wasn’t beautiful on its own, the look promotes sustainability, as it’s made out of 100 percent recycled fibers and organic cotton. Watson said that she worked with Calvin Klein to figure out how to create something that would stand for something she believed in. It really doesn’t get better than a beautiful designer gown for a good cause.

Personally, I am not a huge fan of Malik’s robot arm look. I am; however, a big fan of Hadid’s entire look. Metal was a key part of Met Gala fashion this year, and I love the way it’s incorporated into this dress. The harsh metal paired with the flowy fabric creates a sleek and futuristic feel; her slicked back ponytail and glowy makeup goes perfectly with the dress.

Amidst a sea of dark colors, sharp angles, and metal, Lively opted for a completely different look. The base of the dress is simple and elegant;  the outer layer of embroidered fabric is absolutely stunning. She looks more like a Greek goddess than the product of technology, but the contrast between Lively’s look and those around her just highlighted the graceful sophistication of the dress.
