The holiday season is upon us, and there’s plenty of ways to celebrate near the area. Here are a list of activities to do around Naperville and Aurora, several of which are free of cost or do not demand a lot out of one’s wallet.
Downtown Naperville
Whether it’s to take a stroll and look at the lights, do a little winter shopping, or stop at one of the many restaurants located there, Downtown Naperville is the perfect place to go during this season. Visitors can head to Rotary Hill on New Year’s Eve for a family-friendly celebration that involves dining, shopping, and scavenger hunts, all leading up to the countdown to midnight to celebrate the New Year.
Naper Settlement
Starting Nov. 25 and ending Dec. 24, people can visit Naper Settlement in Downtown Naperville for several events. Visitors can walk around the museum and experience Naper Lights, which is a display of holiday lights all across the grounds. The celebration is presented by Naperville Sunrise Rotary, and features holiday themed lights. Naper Settlement also holds the Christkindlmarket, which opened on Nov. 25 and will end on Dec. 23. Visitors will be able to see live performances from singers, dancers and musicians looking to spread holiday cheer.
Ice skating
There’s always time to go ice-skating during the year, but when time is better than the winter? Students can visit All-Seasons Ice Rink if they prefer indoor ice skating, or choose between Centennial Park in Downtown Naperville or Commissioners Park (3704 111th Street) to enjoy a couple hours on the ice outdoors. Outdoor ice-skating begins on Dec. 15.
Movies
Winter is a great time to watch your favorite movies, whether they’re coming out soon in theaters, or are part of a family tradition every year during the holidays, or just because it feels cozy to grab some blankets and have a marathon with friends. Movies set to come out during December include “Rogue One” (Dec. 16), “Passengers” (Dec. 21), and “Assassin’s Creed” (Dec. 21). If you choose not to go to the movie theater, you can always sit down with the family to watch some Hallmark movies.
