Editorial: The Stampede endorses Senator Bernie Sanders for the Illinois Democratic Primary
The Stampede Editorial Board has decided to endorse Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont for the Illinois Democratic Primary. The board believes that Sanders is uniquely equipped to establish real change in a stagnant nation. When choosing the candidate best fit for students, the board highlighted three critical issues facing students.
The editorial board has decided not to endorse a candidate in the Republican Primary due to the lack of legitimate challengers against incumbent President Trump.
Health
Sanders’ Medicare-for-All plan has drawn criticism from many of the moderate members of the party for being too partisan and the apparent claim that it takes away insurance from over 100 million people.
The idea that Sanders’ plan takes away healthcare from people is half-baked and manufactured to mislead people. Medicare-for-All would take away your private insurance, yes, but replace it with a single-payer insurance system, effectively expanding your actual choice of which doctor and hospital to use outside of the network your old insurance provided.
Proponents of a public option cite the large pricetag to single-payer healthcare but lack an actually feasible alternative. The public option that Mayor Buttigieg and Senator Klobuchar advocate would cost more in the long-run, cover fewer people, be highly ineffective due to the power of the insurance industry, and turn into another big government program that runs down due to overcomplications and a lack of funding.
For students, Medicare-for-All would mean that every student would be able to seek out mental health help regardless of cost. Sen. Sanders’ plan to reduce prescription drug costs also means that no one would be paying egregious prices on prescription drugs.
Medicare-for-All would give Americans security to look for other job opportunities without worrying about losing healthcare coverage, and most importantly it will give more people buying power to both stimulate the economy and control their employers. It’s Sanders’ lifelong embrace of a single-payer system that has earned him the position of being the healthcare candidate.
Education
Sanders has released three different plans to fundamentally change the current education system in the United States. Sanders’ college-for-all and childcare-for-all plans are the most progressive plans of the pack and go beyond just expanding opportunities for Americans.
With the cost of preschool funded by the government, working-class Americans can begin to work without worrying about their kids and avoid paying the high rates of the current childcare industry. Sanders’ plan to cancel student debt and impose a tax on wall street transactions to fund college-for-all stands as a surefire way to both reign in Wall Street, and at the same time establish free education for the people.
Inequality
Illinois has one of the highest rates of income and racial inequality in the country, and as such the Democratic candidate must take it seriously. Senator Sanders best addresses the massive issue of income inequality in a way that would allow for fair taxation and the reduction of the wealth gap.
Sanders’ 2016 campaign was criticized for class reductionism but the campaign has finally embraced racial struggle in many of their plans, somewhat mending the lack of concern of his previous campaign. Despite some weakness with class reductionism, Sanders’ view far outpaces his supporters’ ending up with the mass movement we see today.
Sanders supports plans to reinvest in minority neighborhoods and of course, his social welfare plans stand to allow middle-class families to spend their money more liberally and pursue their career goals.
Senator Sanders’ views have stayed consistent throughout his career, in truth, that signifies just how long the structural issues of modern America have existed for. The next Democratic nominee should continue to work for its constituency, rather than to appeal to the constituency of the opposite party. If the party plans to be a true alternative to Trump’s Republican Party, then it must nominate a true member of the left.
The 2020 election may be one of the most important elections to happen in our nation’s history and it is imperative that the Democrats choose the right nominee going into this struggle. There’s only one candidate with an actual movement that can push through an electoral victory in critical rust belt states in the midwest. While moderatism at a time of uncertainty may seem like a prudent choice, Democrats don’t have the time to wait for a moderate to fix things, the changes must happen now.

Every nation or even state for that matter has places that are economically worse than others. That is the whole idea of the class system. Being founded as a republic (not a democracy), the US overall continues to strive. Your argument doesn’t make much sense, and copying and pasting the definition of Socialism doesn’t make it stronger…

Bernie is a socialist. Socialism has not worked in the past. It will not fail to ruin this country if Bernie is elected.

“America is at it’s peak right now”
If I remember correctly from A.P. World History, the reasons why empires decline and collapse are:
– Leadership failure
– Over-extension
– Economic collapse
– Ideological doubts
– Military defeats
If one compares these factors with how America is doing today, they can conclude America is, indeed, a declining empire.

“Historically whenever a country’s citizens start to strongly rely on their government, it makes the country overall weak from their economy “to the will of their people (I.e Germany recently)”
With the example of Germany, what exactly are you trying to imply?
“So why are we all of a sudden wanting socialism? Do we want to be equally poor? This just doesn’t make sense to me.”
When statistics show that 1% of the population controls 40% of the overall wealth in America and the bottom 90% combined hold only 23% of all the wealth in America as compared to 33% back in 1989. I think THAT doesn’t make sense at all.

Surely if our tax dollars are being used to drone strike civilians in the Middle East, help Israel and Saudi Arabia commit war-crimes through weapons purchases, fund Neo-Nazis in Ukraine, illegally spy on us using the N.S.A. and revoke civil liberties using the Patriot Act, bail out banks during the Great Recession for financial mismanagement, and subsidize and promote industries to actively destroy the only planet that is habitable for life as far as we know in order to gain profit. I’m sure we can redirect money towards helping out fellow Americans struggling with unnecessary debt for seeking higher education and paying ridiculous fines for only seeking affordable treatment to whatever disease they may be struggling with. Wouldn’t that be the more patriotic and American thing to do?

The model that Mr. Sanders proposes is called social democracy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_democracy) and it DOES work. It’s effects can be seen in Norway, Denmark, Finland, France, Britain, Germany, Canada, and most other European countries.

@VOA
To answer your question, social democracy, is a political, social and economic philosophy that supports economic and social interventions to promote social justice within the framework of a liberal democratic polity and a capitalist-oriented economy.(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_democracy). In summary, social democracy seeks to preserve the current capitalist mode of production and economic system, while at the same time emphasizing the protection of the average worker and minorities. It promotes the creation and expansion of a welfare state through policies such as universal healthcare & education, workers rights, encouraged unionization, and protection of the environment regardless of a persons class, ethnicity, race, religion, or gender. The example you provided about the overthrow of the Russian monarchy and the Bolshevik October Revolution, not to be confused with the, February-March revolution in Petrograd (St. Petersberg) which, Tsar Nicholas II abdicated the throne and the Duma, the Russian Parliament, took over. When the Tsar was executed, the Russian civil war was occurring between the Bolsheviks in the west and the Entente and Central Powers backed White Russian government lead by Alexander Kolchak. Before he and his family was executed, they were being held imprisoned under extreme surveillance in a single house in the city of Yekaterinburg. At that time the Czechoslovak Legion were advancing closer and closer towards the city raising fears than if the royal family were to be captured, they would serve as a rallying point for anti-communists of the White movement and serve as the legitimate leader of Russia leading to even greater foreign intervention in the civil war than meager volunteers from the various great powers. Under the influence of the notorious and brutal Cheka, a secret police organization even worse than Stalin’s N.K.V.D., Lenin gave the order to execute him alongside his family. I personally don’t support this decision and condemn it as I am a social democrat monarchist. The other assertion that the Treaty of Versailles lead to the independence of the Baltic countries of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia is completely false. All the Treaty of Versailles had done was to finally end the state of war between the victorious Entente powers and the newly born, Weimar Republic, and enact reparations, restriction of the German military, surrender of colonial possessions in Africa and Asia, and cede parts of historic Prussia to the reborn country of Poland and Lithuania. The rest of the Central Powers, Austria-Hungary, the Ottomans, and Bulgaria, all sued for peace earlier and were either completely dismantled and destroyed or lost portions of territory. The treaty that REALLY gave independence to the Eastern European nations was the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk between the Central Powers and the Bolsheviks which gave Finland, the Baltics, Poland, Ukraine, Belarus alongside the declaration of independence from Georgia, Armenia (promptly invaded by the Ottomans under Enver Pasha), and Azerbaijan. With the collapse of the Germans and the rest of the Central Powers, the Bolsheviks re-conquered Ukraine and the Caucasus nations. The final blow to the newly independent nations of Eastern Europe was the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact signed between the Nazis and Soviets to annex them. Poland was to be split up between the two giants and the Baltics, Bessarabia were to be annexed by the Soviets alongside Finland but they successfully fought back against the Soviets and preserved their independence. To say social democracy is equivalent to Leninism, Maoism, and Stalinism would be a complete lie and a disgrace to those people who fought for equality, freedom, and democracy and at the same time, opposed the authoritarian nature of such ideologies. By the way, if you somehow think the Nazis and their fascist were “socialist” I highly recommend this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHAN-RPJTiE&t=188s.

@Louis Philippe I of Bourbon Orleans.
I’m just gonna assume your comment is comedic or ironic in some way. Because if you read any book on European history or take a class on it (suffer through AP Euro) you would see that socialism in Europe has caused literally everything but peace. For instance, the Bolshevic revolution in Russia where a socialist forced his way to power by overthrowing the monarchy gunning down a defenseless royal family in a basement (father mother and multiple children) then proceeding to execute everyone who disagreed with them. Fast forward to the end of WWI the treaty of Versailles forces Russia to give previously oppressed land freedom. Small nations such as Estonia and Latvia appeared to the joy of their people. But through the unrelenting force of the Soviet military, they were forcefully and violently assimilated resulting in the deaths of millions. Some estimates put the number of deaths due to socialist expansion anywhere from 85 million to 200 million. So I ask how can you HONESTLY say “Social democracy” is the answer after it tore apart Europe and nearly led to a nuclear holocaust?

Oh god here we go again. Bernie is a communist that will trash the economy and make us a third world country. Everyone says, “Oh Bernie is going to give us free college and healthcare for all and its going to all be paid for!” WRONG! WHERE IS ALL OF THAT MONEY COMING FROM. Your taxes. Bernie is going to mark up your taxes so much that its going to be equivalent to paying for a full college education. Also, Bernie is supporting Fidel Castro, a dictator who suppresses his people. Why would we want to elect a leader who is fully supports a dictator. Bernie is literally the Donald Trump of the left but people don’t want to accept that. My mindset is that if the election is Trump V Sanders I am 100% voting for Donnie T because we’d only have to deal with him for 4 years instead of Bernie’s 8.

ight so you guys are a school newspaper for one single high school in illinois, your endorsement will no doubt win him the primaries, furthermore, isn’t the point of political reporting to avoid endorsements or leaning towards one candidate? what’s the point of providing information if that information is meant to sway you to a point of view? an endorsement of a political candidate, regardless of its classification as an editorial, has no place to be titled “endorsed by the stampede”, because then it’s not an editorial. It’s an endorsement. if you really wanna go, hey, here’s why bernie is great, you should do that for every single other candidate. yes, even michael “poor people should just buy more money” bloomberg. because that’s what impartial reporting is. that’s what reporting is. without it, this isn’t news, just opinions posted by high school students. this isn’t butthurt conservatives whining about socialism. this is just being annoyed with an “unbiased” newspaper throwing away an impartial outlook in favor of an endorsement that ultimately means nothing.

“MeTeA MeDiA Isn’T BiASeD tOwArDS ThE DeMoCrAts” Yeah ok. Literally you are DESTROYING your credibility right now. This site has always tried to conceal their super-liberal nature to SOME extent but this article shows those values have been abandoned. You are proving what several people (including me) have been saying for the past several years. our school’s media is so overwhelmingly biased towards one side that nearly none of what comes out of the opinion section can be trusted as “Bipartisan”. Most if not all political articles that come out of this site are extremely one-sided and pro left. and anyone who tries to introduce new ideas is snuffed out by having their comments taken down. How can you promote a site as “Idea friendly” when the same people who all nominated Sanders are also in control of what gets posted and what doesn’t get posted? This article is literally standing proof that what comes out of this site in any way shape or form news-wise is only meant to promote the left ideas and agenda from the people in charge of what gets posted and not to educate the student body with FACTS and allow them to make their own decision on who’s best. and anyone who disagrees needs only to read this article along with the ones from the past several years to find that no alternative ideas are ever presented and there is also a clear “Good” (left) and “Bad” (Right). It’s sad to see this is what our media has devolved into and I sincerely hope that people come to realize this is not how it should be and that we should have a site that promotes education through facts and not indoctrination through feelings.
