Senior David Whang has been involved in music since middle school. He is currently involved in the music program at Metea which includes jazz band, marching band, and his regular music classes. Though this year has been full of uncertainties, David continues to play music in his free time and explore different ways to be proactive in the skill.

When did you start playing music?

I started playing music in the sixth grade. I started with the saxophone, mostly on a whim, and I have been playing ever since.

How are you involved in music at Metea?

I have been in the music program at Metea for all four years of high school. I was a part of both marching band and jazz for the past three years even throughout this recent pandemic.

What influenced you to start playing music?

I didn’t really have much of an influence to start, and I am not entirely sure why I still continue to play. However, learning a piece of music and being able to play and see that process makes me really enjoy the whole process. It’s really just a lot of fun to do and be a part of.

How has the recent pandemic affected your ability to play in and out of school?

With the world on fire, music in school has been vastly different. Instead of live performances, everything is recorded on a site before it is put out for families to watch. All of the students don’t get to hear each other play, and our classes are now part music part theory. Outside of school, not much has changed.

Are there any positives that came out of the pandemic relating to your music career?

One good thing that has come out of the pandemic is that I am able to focus a little more on my own things related to music. School music is enjoyable, but having the time to explore other areas of music on my own time has been great too.

Do you have any future plans related to music?

For the future, if it allows me, I want to record music for multiple video games under multiple gaming companies that players can indirectly listen to and enjoy.
