Homecoming season at Metea is sparking a frenzy amongst almost all the students. Homecoming itself is on October 12, but the week of homecoming brings assemblies and activities to rally the spirit of the whole school. Students begin preparing for homecoming weeks in advance by making dinner plans and finding groups. Most importantly, students try to find their perfect dress.
“My group is going to the Morton Arboretum for pictures, we’re going to get Italian food, and then we are getting corsages,” senior Gauri Soni said “We are going all out.”.
Dress styles are dependent on the homecoming theme each year. The theme for the 2023-2024 school year was “Hollywood Red Carpet” which caused many to wear shades of red, gold, and blue. This year, the theme is “Evening in Paris” which highlights common colours of navy blue and dark red. Where do students get their dresses from?
“I prefer shopping online and ordered my dress off of Amazon,” freshman Lauren Iridin said. “It is just easier than trying on in person.”
Students who order online do it to save time while students who shop in stores do it for the experience. People who shop in stores tend to go to places like Macy’s where there are great deals on amazing dresses. Students shopping online tend to go on Amazon or the websites for local stores in our area.
“I prefer shopping in person, just because it is more of an experience,” said Soni. “You can go out with friends and make an outing of it. It gives live feedback and participation.”
The rules vary by school, but each grade level has a different length that they usually wear. At Metea, our unofficial rule is that underclassmen wear short dresses, while upperclassmen wear long dresses. These rules change depending on the group students are going with. Students of different grade levels tend to match in length for the picture aesthetic. Seniors also get to pick their length for their final homecoming dance.
“My group isn’t really doing a theme, just more of a length,” freshman Layla Shaklor said. “It is usually short for freshmen.”
Any dress can make homecoming a magical experience. Going out with friends, eating dinner, taking pictures, and getting ready for the night is what students look forward to the most.
