It is Friday, the end of a long week. Spirits are high, and a catchy song plays as you make your way to your next class. The music raises the mood of everyone in the building, and it makes your classes a little easier and the day a little shorter.
If you are a new student to Metea, you might not know that during every passing period on Fridays, music is played over the intercom as students make their way to class. During holidays, you can hear festive music throughout the school, and on normal Fridays, the newest trendy song or a throwback will play. Many students look forward to hearing what song may play next while they stroll to class. The music brightens people’s moods and brings up the vibes in the whole building.
This past Friday, the music finally returned, making a clear impact on the students as they shuffled through the hallways. Each Friday that went without music, curiosity about what had happened to the tradition arose among students and teachers.
Principal Daniel DeBruycker explained that the speaker system was the cause of the music absence.
According to DeBruycker, the delay in the music was caused by a complete change in the announcement system due to safety adjustments. The reason the music took so long to get back was because of kinks being worked out within the new system and getting everything set back up for the school year.
Most people probably do not realize how much work goes into choosing what songs to play. There’s a certain criteria that the chosen songs have to be a part of.
“Clean music, something upbeat, something that’s maybe tied to the theme for that day,” said DeBruycker
DeBruycker is not the only person that manages the Friday music selection. Usually, students are the ones responsible for choosing the music. This year senior and emcee Jordan Jones is working with DeBruycker on the music.
“We’ve also even asked for teacher recommendations[, and during] teacher appreciation week we’ll play old school music,” DeBruycker said. “And, Jordan has students that know that he plays the music, so he’ll actually take requests sometimes.”
DeBruycker knows that the students enjoy the music and continues to figure out ways to adjust the music with the new system.
“I think it just gives people something to look forward to on Friday,” said DeBruycker.
Friday is often the favorite day of the week. When music plays throughout the day, there is a positive impact that was missed while the system was being fixed. It is clear that everyone enjoys this tiny tradition being back, and hopefully it will continue into the coming Fridays.
