The 2024-2025 winter sports season brought a mix of challenges and achievements for Metea Valley’s athletes. Each team faced its own battles, some finding success in the postseason while others struggled to advance. Despite the ups and downs, Mustang athletes gave it their all, representing their school with pride.
Wrestling provided a bright spot for Metea, as junior Ashley Basmajian earned a place in the state tournament. Her hard work and perseverance throughout the season paid off, making her one of the standout athletes of the winter sports season. Wrestling continues to be a sport where Metea athletes make their mark, and Basmajian’s achievement adds to that tradition.
In competitive dance, the team put in a strong effort but was unable to advance past Sectionals. The dancers showcased their talent throughout the season, performing with energy and precision, but the road ended earlier than they had hoped. Their efforts, however, did not go unnoticed, as they continued to represent the school with dedication.
Gymnastics had an individual highlight as well, with senior Bridget Anderson earning a spot at the State competition.
“I was very excited to go to state my senior year,” Anderson said. “It was very exciting, especially with my teammate whom I went to state for diving with.”
Her qualification was a testament to her years of training and commitment to the sport. Competing at State is no small accomplishment, and Anderson’s performance capped off the winter season with a strong finish.
“This sport has been a part of my life for the last 10 years,” Anderson said. “It’s taught me how to work hard and put my best effort into everything.”
Girls basketball endured a tough season, finishing with a record of 8-22. The team worked hard throughout the year, but they ultimately fell short in the first round of Regionals, bringing their season to an early close.
Meanwhile, the boys’ basketball team had a more successful run, finishing with a 20-13 record. Their strong play carried them into the regional championship, marking a solid end to their season despite falling just short of further advancement.
Bowling saw individual success for both the girls’ and boys’ teams. Although the team scores did not advance, three girls qualified for Sectionals, showing their skill and dedication on the lanes. On the boys’ side, one bowler also made it to Sectionals, continuing the program’s ability to produce strong individual competitors.
The boys’ swimming and diving faced a difficult season, struggling to break through in key competitions. Despite their efforts, the team was unable to secure any major wins or advance any athletes past Sectionals. The determination and effort put in by the swimmers, however, remained evident as they continued to push themselves in the pool.
Though not every team found postseason success, the effort and determination displayed by Metea’s winter athletes remained consistent across all sports. The season was filled with both individual and team accomplishments, and the lessons learned from the competition will carry forward as athletes prepare for the next challenges ahead.
