Metea families and friends gathered at Two Brothers Roundhouse to support and enjoy an evening performance of Mustang Comedy on Sunday, March 9.
Matt Drufke, English teacher Erin Drufke’s husband, frequently performs standup comedy at Two Brothers Roundhouse. Every year, he dedicates a night of his performance to Mustang Comedy.
“It’ll be fun,” AP English teacher Lynnea Befus said. Befus, who sponsors Mustang Comedy, explained that the showcase was a unique opportunity for students to showcase their stand-up comedy skills.
The students performing have spent weeks preparing for this evening, taking part in Mr. Drufke’s comedy workshops that helped students write jokes, learn how to structure their comedy, and understand the rhythm of a punchline. Befus describes the standup sets as funny monologues, showcasing the hard work and creativity the students have invested in their work.
Unlike the usual improv-focused Mustang Comedy Club events, we saw students perform carefully crafted routines on Sunday Night.
“They’ve been writing, revising, and performing these sets over and over again,” Befus explained.
The show is part of the club’s mission to encourage creativity, practice public speaking, and foster connections with a wider community through the use of comedy.
It has spectacular skits like junior Saanvi Singh ranting about her experience learning how to drive. Social studies teacher Ben Lundy’s anecdotes of his unfortunate experience of being six foot five. Junior Tommy King’s comparison of his plant Prince Philip to the actual Prince Philip. Junior Cal Leung’s irritation over her dysfunctional high-tech fridge. And Mrs. Befus’s exasperation with zodiac sign believers in her class.
“I just think that everyone who’s starting comedy now, just keep at it, it’s nerve-wracking but it’s worth it,” Dodson says.
Overall, the stand-up comedy showcase is a fantastic opportunity for students to hone their performance skills and engage with the Metea Valley community. It’s a night full of laughter, creativity, and connection as students take their first steps into the world of comedy.
“I was excited to see my friends performing,” junior Samia Khan said. “I heard about them preparing for it and I think it was really cool to see them actually do it.”
