Literary Magazine hosted their Open Mic event in the LMC on Thursday, April 10, to create an environment where students were free to present their literary works and skits and have a good time without judgment.
Literary Magazine is a team of dedicated students who work every year to create Metea’s Mustang Wild magazine, which features poetry, short stories, and artwork. It serves as a creative outlet and showcases all the talent and interest students at Metea have in creative writing and artistry.
“I just hope that we can continue to build a community of writers, weather its poetry, comedy, or even songwriting, creating a way that people feel like they have an outlet to share not only what they’re writing, but what they’re thinking, what they care about,” Literary Magazine co-sponsor Karen Aigner said.
The afternoon started with students gathering in the LMC, just chatting and getting to know one another. However, after the first person grabbed the mic, it was full of excitement and laughter.
“I came because this seemed interesting,” sophomore Jordyn Brown said. “I enjoyed it a lot. These ladies are pretty cool.”
The whole afternoon was filled with unconditional support of student works, the audience respectfully and encouragingly clapped whenever a volunteer came for the mic. Students had a fantastic time and smiled the whole way through. Writers, poets, and performers of all levels took the stage to share their original work, fostering connection and inspiration and making it a memorable night to celebrate the power of words and storytelling.
“The goal for today was for everyone to not be afraid or feel shameful of expressing your emotions and your thoughts,” said junior Saanvi Singh. “I think it’s really cool to hear how other people express themselves.”
