The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City hosted the annual Met Gala on May 5th, spotlighting the theme of “Tailored for You.” This year’s gala paid tribute to black fashion, dandyism, and the cultural significance of tailored menswear clothing, marking the first Met Gala since 2003 to entirely focus on menswear.
This Met Gala was co-chaired by Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, and A$AP Rocky, alongside Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour–all very well-known stylists in the fashion industry. Together, they shaped a red carpet experience that honored individuality in fashion.
Metea Valley fashion teacher, Alyssa Stair, shared her impression of the event.
“I thought the Met Gala this year was very interesting to see because the looks were a bit more simplistic than years past,” Stair said. “I believe the exhibit was called Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. I just thought overall, it was a really fun year to see.”
Here’s a look at some of the standout celebrity looks from the night:
The gala ended up raising a record-breaking 31 million dollars for the Costume Institute, surpassing previous fundraising efforts and proving that fashion is more than just aesthetic–it’s about storytelling. The theme “Tailored for You” wasn’t just a call for custom-made outfits; it was a celebration of culture, identity, and the people who’ve been shaping fashion’s future long before the Met Gala.
Senior Fatima Abdul Hadi shared her thoughts on the event.
“My favorite outfits from the Met Gala were Teyana Taylor, Damson Idris, André3000, and Jodie Turner-Smith. Each of them represented the theme perfectly, especially Teyana Taylor,” Hadi said. “The Met Gala is an exciting event to look forward to because it allows people to see different types of creativity in our world and what those ideas look like when brought to light.”
At Metea Valley, teachers like Stair believe that the Met Gala’s significance goes beyond the red carpet.
“We talk in class about how clothing style, choice of color, and design really showcase personality,” Stair said. “I think fashion is becoming a big form of self-expression, and I love that events like the Met Gala can inspire young artists and highlight identity.”
As the night closed, it was clear that this year’s Met Gala had arguably the best-dressed individuals, surpassing funding expectations and contributing to the future of fashion as a whole. These celebrities proved that the Met Gala isn’t just about dressing up; it’s about showing up for history, heritage, and tailoring the future on your own terms.
