Despite a tough loss in a pre-season scrimmage against the Geneva Vikings, the Metea Valley boys varsity soccer team remains optimistic about their upcoming season. The match, which was a crucial process for the team’s pre-season training into the regular season, was a learning experience that highlighted their strengths and areas for improvement.
Senior, Michael Birkner was excited about the team’s performance. “I feel like this team today has a lot of chemistry, and we worked really well on and off the ball,” Birkner said after the match. “We know we have a lot to improve on, but I see a lot of potential. We’re growing together as a unit.”
Regardless of the loss, the Mustangs showcased their strong resilience and teamwork. Senior Joshua Poces-Bell, who played a strong role in the midfield, was focused on his personal development.”I want to work on my technical skills as a player, especially passing and dribbling, and also on working better with my teammates,” Poces-Bell said. “Every time we step on the field, we want to improve and play smarter.”
The head coach of boys soccer, Josh Robinson also expressed confidence in the team’s abilities and mindset. When asked about the team’s goals for the season, he did not shy away from setting high expectations. “If we’re not trying to win a state championship every year, then what are we doing?” Robinson said. “Our goal is simple: at the right time of year, we want to be playing the best soccer possible. We have the talent, and now it’s all about putting everything together.”
While the 1-0 loss to Geneva may have been disappointing, the Metea Valley boys soccer team remains focused on it’s bigger picture. With strong leadership and a clear vision, the Mustangs are ready to make a powerful push toward a great season.
