While many shows like “The Walking Dead”, “Game of Thrones”, “Gotham”, and Marvel’s “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” are touted as the best TV shows of the fall, many other shows, old and new, are left in the dust. While I personally love S.H.I.E.L.D., many others, including myself, seem to get lost in the flurry of Westeros’ and Walkers. That’s why I’ve compiled a list to talk about four shows, in no specific order, that should be getting more attention from students.
“Last Week Tonight” with John Oliver
John Oliver worked with comedic giants Steve Colbert and Jon Stewart, two of the best comedians since Carlin and Ingesias. Oliver tells the news of last week every sunday, with a comedic twist and a huge dose of reality. And as some of the topics cover touchy topics like abortion, the death penalty, transgender rights, and FIFA, the comedy is greatly appreciated. “Last Week Tonight” is currently running every Sunday at 11:00 p.m.
“Boy Meets World”
Boy Meets World is about the life of an average boy named Cornelius “Cory” Matthews, and his adventure from middle school to college. As Cory and his friend Shawn grow up, they face tough topics like being married in college, facing the death of a loved one, and see many people come and go through their life, all the while being mentored by their teacher George Feeney. Boy Meets World is currently being re-run.
“Quantico”
“Quantico” is a classic CSI show with a twist. A lot of the story is told in flashbacks, with Priyanka Chopra starring as Alex Parrish. Each character has their own motivation to join the FBI, with the series cutting between the past (at the FBI training academy in Quantico, Virginia) and the present, with one of the recruits having masterminded the biggest terrorist plot since 9/11. Quantico airs at 9 PM.
“Transformers: Animated”
Now, I know what you think. “Why is this such a life changing show? I know how Transformers works, I’ve seen the movies.” And while, yes, the Transformers have always been caught up in a civil war, the rules have changed. For one, the war is over, and the Autobots are currently hunting down the Decepticons, who have turned to guerrilla warfare to take back “what’s rightfully ours.” The cast comprises of an elite guard washout (Optimus), a veteran with PTSD (Ratchet), two bumbling sorta child soldiers (Bumblebee and Bulkhead), a cyber-ninja (Prowl), and the obligatory human sidekicks (Sari and Issac Sumac), all while keeping a fairly comedic tone. TFA isn’t airing.
