Girls’ Basketball
This past week was one of suspense for the Mustangs, as they competed in two games so tense that they were sure to induce a bit of stressful nail biting. The first game resulted in a narrow loss of 57-51 against Lake Park. The team’s usual energy and passion was present, but took a rough turn, manifesting itself in excessive fouls. With four players fouled out of the game, Lake Park had ample chance at scoring towards the end of the second half, resulting in a disappointing loss for the Mustangs. Towards the end of the week, the Mustangs accomplished a feat unseen until now in women’s varsity basketball. In one of their most exciting games this season, Metea took down the Neuqua Valley Wildcats, 55-54.
“The game was close until the last seconds,” senior Meryl Barnes said. “Beating Neuqua was probably the best memory of this season because it has never been done before.”
When asked what it meant to be a senior on the first women’s varsity basketball team in Mustang history to beat Neuqua, Barnes said, “having been playing all four years at Metea, it is my job to be a leader to others [in the program].”
