On Saturday, the girls’ tennis team headed into the DuPage Valley Conference championships, seeded third and playing to win. Overall, varsity placed fourth in the conference and the team advances to IHSA Sectionals.

On varsity, Abbey Woods and Taylor Goldman placed second on first doubles, beating Naperville North’s Irene Zhang and Chandani Bansal. Meera Baid placed third on first singles, and Natalia Kochkodan placed third on second singles.

JV1 put up a valiant fight against the other schools, but both the singles and doubles ultimately fell in the DVC tournament.

Although some of the other DVC schools are highly competitive at tennis, the team had a positive attitude towards the championship. “It doesn’t really matter if we win or lose, it’s just fun being there,” sophomore Taylor Goldman said.

The team has had a prolific season overall. Varsity beat St. Francis 9-0 on Sept. 21, which happened to be their Senior Night. They also beat Rosary 7-0 last week, with doubles duo Taylor Goldman and Abbey Woods, and Meera Baid playing first singles. Next Saturday, the Mustangs travel to West Aurora for IHSA Sectionals.

“I’m excited to see their improvements. I’ve already seen how they have improved throughout the season, but it’ll be interesting to see who wins and also a lot of the girls are replaying people that they played earlier in the season so it’ll be fun to see that competition,” JV coach Bridget Shrode said.
