Water Polo hosts Mustang Varsity Tournament in preparation for Sectionals

Water polo hosted the Mustang Varsity Tournament on Saturday as both teams prepare for IHSA Sectionals this week. The tournament hosted both boys’ and girls’ teams in a round robin format where each team played three games.

The girls beat Naperville North 12-7, won 10-4 against Stagg, and beat Bremen 13-1 for an undefeated tournament. The roster included a few JV players who will be competing at Sectionals and allowed the team to assess their strengths before next week.

“I think it went really well for us, we were able to put in girls who don’t always get to play and we were able to bring out some of our JV players that we brought up for our Sectionals team and they got a feel for how Sectionals is going to go. Overall I think it went really well,” junior Laura Kluge said.

The boys’ team also won all of their games, beating St.Charles East 11-1 and going on to win 11-5 against Stagg and 17-6 against Bremen. In the end, the team won the tournament and used the victory to set their sights on Sectionals.

“[The tournament] gives a chance for everybody to get playing time in before Sectionals and it allows us to see all of the hard work we’ve put in to the season and confirm that we’ve done things right through the season,” boys head coach Adam Zankowski said.

Based on their performance at the tournament, hopes are high for Sectionals next week. The teams are looking forward to playing their best and advancing as far as they can. The girls play on Thursday against St.Charles East and the boys compete on Wednesday against Naperville North.

“We’re finishing the season really strong. Right now, we’re on a five game win streak so we’re hoping to go into Sectionals strong and just have a good showing out there,” junior Co-Captain Colin Szczesny said.
