Students evacuated the school due to a fire emergency response in which the fire alarms were set off due to smoke detectors picking up smoke in the school kitchen.
“[We] identified that there was smoke in the kitchen, and there was a piece of toast that was left on a griddle [for] a panini that was being made,” Principal Daniel DeBruycker said.
The fire alarms rang at 10:31am during fifth period and students were promptly evacuated from the building. Following an orderly evacuation, there was a response from the local fire authorities. Fire trucks pulled up to the kitchen, towards the east side of the school building.
The school was given an all clear from the fire department and students were allowed to enter the building at 10:46 am.
A schoolwide announcement was made by Principal Debruycker at 10:50 am, which prompted students to head back to their fifth period class and reminded them that the bell will ring in five minutes.
Principal DeBruycker is now working with the fire department to have the kitchen up and running for sixth period lunch.
“I’m proud of the staff and students for clearing out quickly and coming back in when they [could].” DeBruycker said.
