A terrorist attack in Kashmir led to a recent escalation between India and Pakistan, sparking aerial attacks between the two countries. The attack in Pahalgam, part of the Indian-administered side of Kashmir, killed 26 people. India immediately blamed Pakistan, stating government involvement which Pakistan denied. Attacks were fired from both sides. The initial response from India was Operation Sindoor, which claimed to target terrorist bases. Both territories began targeting military locations, eventually going very deep into both nations.
After four days of heavy conflict, a ceasefire was reached. The ceasefire was originally announced on Saturday, May 10. However, India claimed that Pakistan broke it just hours after it was announced. Currently, the ceasefire is still in place and has been since Sunday, May 11. Both India and Pakistan have claimed victory, claiming that they have achieved their desired goals through the battle.
This conflict stemmed from the division of British India into India and Pakistan. After the division, the territories of Jammu and Kashmir were left to decide their own fate. India and Pakistan both laid claim to Kashmir, beginning a conflict over it. For many years, the Kashmir conflict was left unresolved, leading to many border disputes and fights over the territory.
