Unexpected NFL season: Why you should tune in

I love football. It’s my favorite sport, and the 2025 season of the NFL has reinforced this. We’ve seen comebacks, upsets, fall-offs, and just flat-out terrible performances like never before. Some of the craziest games I’ve ever watched have been in this season. Let’s talk about some of my favorite highlights from this season so far.

First of all, some of the best teams and players from the 2024 season have fallen off like a drunk guy on a boat. A perfect example of this is the Buffalo Bills. Last year, they were in the contender’s club for the Super Bowl, and quarterback Josh Allen even won MVP. He was, to put it simply, one of the best quarterbacks in the entire league.

Unfortunately, his victories didn’t carry over to this season. In a game against the Houston Texans, Allen was sacked, meaning he was tackled before gaining any yards, EIGHT TIMES! You’re telling me that the MVP of the 2024 season was sacked eight times in one game, against the Texans!? That was HILARIOUS, what a fall from grace. All jokes aside. That was one of the most disappointing games I’ve ever watched. I expected much better from Josh Allen, of all players. But he’s not the only “good” quarterback to get decimated this season.

The Kansas City Chiefs got a wake-up call this season, and a brutal one at that. The back-to-back Super Bowl champions from 2023-2024 now have a record of 6-7 at the time of writing this. Most recently, they lost to the Texans (crazy how the Texans have been moving recently). Clearly, the Chiefs ran out of money to bribe the refs. They had no right making it to the Super Bowl last year when they only won on calls that would get any ref fired. I have always had a passionate hatred for the Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes basically became the new Tom Brady in my eyes (as in he made the NFL boring). With what we’ve seen this year, it has become clear that Patrick Mahomes is nothing but a mediocre quarterback who was hyped up for no reason.

Speaking of mediocre quarterbacks, have you seen the Eagles play? Amazingly, the defending Super Bowl champions appeared to have revealed themselves as frauds, losing to the Denver Broncos, New York Giants (how do you even manage that?!), Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, and the LA Chargers. The Philadelphia Eagles’ main strategy has been one thing: the tush-push. Basically, they put offensive linemen behind Jalen Hurts, take the snap, and push Hurts forward until they actually reach something. Making the same play over and over again makes their offensive plays predictable, but Nick Sirianni, the head coach of the Eagles, likes to live in a fantasy where his team wins every single game.

While once-great teams run out of steam, other teams appear to be making unforgettable comebacks that belong in the history books. The New England Patriots had a rough season last year, going 5-12. This season, however, has the Patriots in the AFC number one seed with a record of 11-2, meaning if the season ended now, they would be in the Super Bowl. So who could’ve caused such a great comeback? None other than Drake Maye himself. He’s so good that his nickname is “Drake Maye.” They’ve even gone as far as theorizing that Tom Brady is Maye’s father. If that is not a testament to skill, I don’t know what is. The Pats aren’t the only team that made a comeback. And while there are many great teams in the NFL, I think that the biggest turnaround has to have come from my favorite team, “Daaaa Bears!”

As a Bears fan, I’ll admit that the past couple of years haven’t been great. However, that ends now! Under their new head coach, Ben Johnson, the Bears have gone 9-4 so far, the best the team has ever done since 2018. Under Johnson, the Bears have effectively done a 180, even becoming the first seed in the entire NFC at one point. The team itself has done wonderfully. The Bears had a rough start, going 0-2 at the beginning of the season, only to respond with a four-game winning streak until facing the Baltimore Ravens. They passed that streak, too, winning five games in a row, even beating the Eagles in a major upset.

Unfortunately, good things never last forever. The Bears lost 21-28 against their rival, the Green Bay Packers. Strangely enough, though, both sides were proud of the Bears’ performance at the game. Bears fans took the loss as inspiration to do better in the future, and Packers fans were glad that one of the greatest sports rivalries in history was finally back.

It’s safe to say that this year has been crazy. People actually watch football again. And if you haven’t been watching, you should start now.
