District 204 will be having an asynchronous learning day tomorrow, Jan. 23. An extreme cold warning issued by the National Weather Service details wind chills between 30 and 40 degrees below freezing, making the weather dangerously cold. These conditions are expected to last from 3 a.m. to 12 p.m. tomorrow.
Asynchronous means that while physically, school will not be in session, teachers are still expected to post assignments on Google Classroom for students to complete by the end of the day. Teachers will be available via email for any questions students may have. An email went out to all staff informing them of this change to tomorrow’s schedule.
“Students will follow their e-Learning Day schedules and access lessons and assignments through their teachers and learning platforms,” the email said. “Staff will be available to support students during the school day, and additional details will be shared by schools and teachers.”
All before-school activities, sports, and meetings will be canceled. However, with the weather expected to improve slightly by 12, all after-school activities are undecided and will be confirmed tomorrow.
“The status of all after-school activities will be communicated by building principals, and athletic events will occur as scheduled,” The email said.
In addition to school being canceled, the planned pep assembly for Friday, Jan. 23, will now be moved to Feb. 6. Staff strongly encourage students to prioritize safety in the cold weather and to avoid going outside.
“Dangerously low wind chills as low as 35 below zero could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes,” an emergency alert from weatherkit.apple.com said.
