Basketball season continues over winter break

Boys’ and girls’ basketball seasons come to an end in mid-February. The past few weeks have contained wins and losses, kicking off the second half of the season.

Boys’ varsity basketball entered winter break with a 5-3 record and are third in DuPage Valley. During winter break the team emerged with an 11-5 record after defeating Geneva 58-51, Richards 84-45, Crane Medical/Chicago Talent Development (CMCTD) 72-44, Sandburg 59-36, Naperville North 50-47 and Taft 59-57. Yet, the Mustangs were able to keep their third place spot in the DuPage Valley conference.

In their first week back from break they defeated Oswego 51-43 and  Naperville Central 73-49 last week. The team went on to play three games at the Wheaton Warrenville South tournament. The boys’ lost their first game against Normal Community 76-67 on January 14, however, they bounced back on January 16 defeating Plainfield South 61-46 and Warren Township 45-44. The Mustangs play their next game against Dekalb at home on Friday, Jan. 20 at 7 pm. 

Meanwhile, girls’ varsity basketball began with a 1-12 record and is last in the Dupage Valley conference and played Joliet West, Nazareth Academy, Naperville North and South Elgin. 

The team played seven games over winter break. They defeated Southland College Prep (SCP) 43-23, Lane Tech 42-35 and South Elgin 60-46. However, they lost to Nazareth Academy 53-15, Morgan Park 54-39 and Naperville North 57-30. 

After winter break, the team currently has an overall record of 4-16 and a conference record of 0-4, placing them sixth in the DuPage Valley Conference with their most recent losses against conference rivals Naperville Central 41-70 and Naperville North 30-57. However, the team beat South Elgin 60-46. The girls basketball team’s next game is against Dekalb on Thursday, Jan. 19 at 7 pm.
