The Mustangs varsity soccer team lost 1-0 to the Waubonsie Valley Wildcats after a tension-filled game, full of many chances by both sides.
At Tuesday’s game, the stands were filled by many supporters, along with the teachers who were selected by the players for Teacher’s Appreciation Week. Accompanying them in the stands was the student section and the Mustang Emcee’s, who directed cheers and chants to motivate the players.
The first half was much of a back-and-forth battle. Both teams had plenty of chances to put the ball in the back of the net. For every chance the Warriors had, Metea fired right back with a solid play of their own. They denied many of their rivals’ chances, and took many shots on goal.
“[We need to work on] maintaining intensity as a team,” junior forward Eric Jernigan said. “When we dropped our intensity, their forwards were able to counter attack.”
At halftime, the Mustangs participated in Teacher’s Appreciation by recognizing the teachers who have done great work in the classroom for them. The players lined up and took pictures with their selected teacher while the announcer read out the statement that the players wrote.
In the second half, it was much of the same back-and-forth action. But with under 5 minutes left in the game, the Wildcats pushed forward and took a shot from outside the box, resulting in being the only goal scored in the game. Metea did not let this discourage them, as they fought hard to equalize until the final whistle.
Despite the loss, the Mustangs look to bounce back with a win in the next game on Wednesday, hosting the Hinsdale Central Red Devils.
