Christmas in July is a popular advertisement in the U.S. Many television channels show holiday movies throughout the month, and stores like Hallmark will temporarily put out holiday-themed merchandise. A teasing of Christmas in the summer can be a fun way to shake things up, but now Christmas is overtaking the fall holiday season too.
“Each year the holidays are coming sooner and sooner, and it is very odd,” junior Anne Jones said. “However I am ready for it to come because I am ready for the break!”
I am all for Christmas and celebrating the holidays, but when I heard that some radio stations were switching to Christmas music on Nov. 1, I felt like we didn’t fully have time to appreciate the fall holiday season. Halloween just passed, and even before Halloween, Christmas decorations were lining the shelves, replacing the Halloween section. Matching family Pjs have already gone out, and many stores are pushing their Christmas sales.
Thanksgiving has been celebrated since our country’s founding, and now it is practically invisible. The holiday season goes from Halloween straight to Christmas. Hallmark’s “Countdown to Christmas” movies started on Oct. 19 and run until well after Christmas. I love the Hallmark Christmas specials, but the fall movies only run for a little over a month before Christmas takes over for the next two months.
Even the weather agrees that the Christmas season doesn’t start soon enough. In previous years, we have had snowstorms, wind, freezing temperatures, and normal temperatures on Halloween. This year was freezing with a windstorm, putting the weather apps under a wind advisory.
Radio station 93.9 is many people’s favorite to listen to in the car, and on Nov. 1, it switched from normal music to Christmas music. Jamming to Christmas music is great when snow is coming down and the countdown to Christmas has begun, but starting on the first day of Nov. is too early.
“It slightly bothers me that people start to play Christmas music in October because it is just too early to think about that,” Jones said. “I want to save that exciting feeling for the 2 weeks before Christmas or at the very least December.”
Christmas is taking over bit by bit and it needs to stop.
