A roaring student section and a fast 9-0 start fueled Metea Valley’s Ultimate Frisbee team to a commanding 12-2 win over the Latin School of Chicago’s Colossus this past Wednesday.
With the crowd fully engaged from the opening pull, the Mustangs fed off the energy, turning defensive stops into scoring runs and delivering their most complete performance of the season so far.
Team Captain Thaurn Anand mentioned how he was “ecstatic” about the game.
“I’m proud to play with these guys every day,” Anand said. “All the new players played well, all the old guys stepped up and led, and we won as a team together.”
With the dominant 9-point start setting the clear tone, the Mustangs’ success was rooted in the effort they had put in long before game day.
“I think the overall team did really well today, and this is the best I’ve ever seen us play,” junior Aksh Raje said. “We went through those gruesome practices, 3 p.m. every single day, two hours, people stay extra, people work hard, which really showed off today.”
That preparation translated directly into key moments throughout the game, as Metea consistently capitalized on both offensive opportunities and defensive stops. Even after allowing a late score, the team maintained control and composure, hitting the 10-point mersey rule cap to defeat Colossus.
A couple of standout match moments included Anand’s upline cut to Raje, who then sent it back downfield to Raje in the endzone using a hammer throw. A hammer throw is where you throw it vertically over your head, with this being their first one of the season.
“You don’t really do a lot of those throws; they’re really special,” Raje said.
Another key moment was when Ravi Hickey sent Arnov Umbarje downfield, and he head-tapped an opponent in the endzone. This play resulted in electricity from not only the bench but the student section as well.
The impact of the student section extended beyond just noise, becoming a driving force behind the team’s confidence and energy throughout the game.
“In my three years… I’ve never seen a student section here, and the student section here is the best, better than the basketball games, better than the football games, better than everything, man,” Raje said. “When I saw the student section, I knew I was gonna play my best.”
With every big play, the crowd responded, and the Mustangs matched that energy on the field, turning momentum into consistent execution from start to finish.
With a dominant win over Latin School of Chicago’s Colossus, the Mustangs not only showcased their growth as a team but also gave a glimpse of what could be building this season. As the year continues, Metea will look to carry that same intensity forward. With the kind of energy shown this week, the team is hoping even more students come out to support and be part of the atmosphere that’s just beginning to take shape.
