As the fall sports season quickly comes to an end, one group of athletes has experienced great success in the past few months. Having just came off a 3rd place finish at the DuPage Valley Conference Championships this past Friday, girls’ cross country will look to keep up its motivation for the IHSA regional meet on Saturday. The following weekend, the athletes will participate in the state series.

One factor which has helped bring in success for this group has been the consistent leadership and determination of the athletes. The group has seen many individual highlights, including 6th and 11th place finishes from varsity seniors Leana Goldman and Nicki Cast, respectively at conference this past weekend. Considering the veteran experience they bring, they will look to lead the way at regionals on Saturday.

“We are driven by our seniors, they’re a major part of the system in place and they’re strong leaders,” head coach Eric Anerino said.

Although the seniors have seen tremendous success, several underclassmen have helped contribute significantly as well. At conference this past weekend, varsity sophomore Terri Scarlett placed 16th, while sophomore Carly Cast placed 1st among freshmen and sophomores.

“Every girl, top to bottom, has just continued to improve,” Anerino said.

So while it’s no secret that this season has been one filled with highlights, Coach Anerino believes that having a strong work ethic and having strong momentum for any race is the best way to continue success. With approximately three weeks remaining in the season, there’s no reason why more great moments can’t happen.

“The best way to prepare for any meet is just to keep up the same confidence we’ve had all season,” Anerino said.
